CITY SOUTH LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

In 1986, the South San Antonio Chamber of Commerce saw a need to identify, acquaint, and motivate
potential leaders in the community to address the continued needs and challenges of the south side
of San Antonio. A group was formed to challenge it's participants to study these changing dynamics
and build stronger ties within the community, and over the past 20 years it has evolved and is as lively
as our community.

Today, the City South Leadership experience is a nine month program that studies economic and
community development, volunteerism, partnerships, internal/external relations, and much more.
Participants are exposed to a wide array of venues, knowledgeable speakers, and educational tours of
a wide range of locations during the course of the program.

The curriculum is guided by John Maxwell's, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and students
receive continuing education credits through St. Philip's College upon completion of the program.
Students will develop greater personal leadership skills to use and take back to their places of
employment and throughout the community. Students gain confidence through public speaking
opportunities and organizational skills are strengthened through team work and group activities.

Throughout the nine month program participants will utilize their class mates and work as a team to
coordinate multiple fundraising opportunities utilizing and expanding upon each of their skills in an
effort to give back to the southern sector. In 2005, the City South Leadership Class created a legacy of
gifting scholarships to graduating seniors from South San Antonio High Schools. The scholarships are
awarded on a competitive basis to seniors who demonstrate outstanding potential for leadership and
civic duty. The scholarship was named after Douglas Carter in 2006, a former Class Chairperson and
integral part of the program's success. The 2010 Douglas H. Carter scholarship recipients each
received a non-renewable scholarship of $1,000 each, totaling $10,000.

If you are interested in joining this hands-on experience and exceptionally rewarding program and
willing to make the nine month commitment to the Southern Sector of San Antonio, please fill out and
submit the attached application. We are looking for a diverse group of individuals who are
enthusiastic, motivated and ready to focus on their personal growth.
